Tioman Island
Tioman Island had been first discovered by Chinese and Arabs seafarers and traders around thousand years ago. This small mountaineous island (39km by 12km) located 32km off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia had been a replenishing point for fresh water and wood. The famous twin peaks known as donkey ears to some and dragon horns to others provided a navigational point for seamen heading to the south of Malaysia.
The highest peak is Gunung Kajang towering over the jungle at 1038m it can be seen as far as Mersing. 98% of Tioman is covered by a dense thousand year old jungle which provides Tioman residents plenty of fresh air and clean water streams.
There are many trading and World War II wrecks from ancient times around and near the island. This provides endless scuba diving opportunities for enthusiasts. You might even find small pieces of Ming dynasty porcelain in the shallow waters.
Tioman has at least 8 villages and more than 18 beaches. Some beaches have been developed with resorts while many remain untouched by development. It is rumored that the tropical island's beauty had been used as island scenes for the motion picture version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific (1958).
Besides scuba diving and beach activities, there is rock climbing, cycling, mountain hiking and even golf!
